Truckee prepares for one of the biggest storms of the season

The Tahoe Truckee Unified School District made Thursday an early dismissal day, giving families the time to stock up and get home safely.

TRUCKEE, Calif. — Snow continues to fall steadily in Truckee, making conditions dangerous for drivers and closing parts of Interstate 80 throughout Thursday.

A mix of light snow and icy rain hasn't given crews enough to plow in the town of Truckee, but John Mix says it makes for perfect snowshoeing conditions.

"(It) sounds great. I hope we get it, the mountain needs it. It will give us a nice long ski season, so bring us a bunch of snow the next four days please," said Mix.

Another group was up near Emerald Bay in South Lake Tahoe as folks from the Bay Area and San Diego descend on the Sierra for snow.

"Our intention is to get out for a one or two-mile walk," said Mix.

The excitement is shared by Nicholas Bonin and his mom Annette Sanchez who are house sitting in Truckee with plans to snowboard.

"She's ready to get snowed in. We are going to go get some food, just a last stop for supplies," said Bonin.

Meanwhile, the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District isn't taking any chances. Thursday was an early dismissal day, giving families the time to stock up and get home safely.

Amber Burke, spokesperson for the school district, says they assess every morning if there should be school or not in a 3:30 a.m. meeting.

"This year, we have five snow days built into our schedule and next year we have seven days built in just because the last few years we have had so many snow days,” said Burke.

The school district says, depending on when they signed up for alerts, families will know by 5 or 6 a.m. if it's a snow day or another early dismissal.
