SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento region finally saw some relief Tuesday after a series of winter storms slammed the area for weeks.
However, the cleanup continues, which includes efforts to move the hundreds of massive trees that fell in dozens of neighborhoods.
For nonprofit Team Rubicon, the process takes a lot of effort, planning, some muscle and a lot of heavy duty equipment.
"The trees are massive, so we have some advanced Sawyers, probably the best in the country in Sacramento right now," said Brandon Torigian, operations associate with Team Rubicon.
Adding to their resources is their team of trained professionals.
"We have so many people with skills and our certified instructors," said Torigian.
Team Rubicon was handling some chainsaw operations and debris removal after the winter storms took down hundreds of trees in Sacramento this month.
"It's been a unique experience, especially doing it in an urban environment like Sacramento," said Torigian.
The veteran-led nonprofit humanitarian organization helps communities before, during and after natural disasters and crises. They were called in to help by Sacramento County, the City of Sacramento and Placer County.
For their latest mission, about 50 people from all across the country, ranging from 21 to 70 years old, are lending a helping hand anyway they can.
"We have a mixture of people that can contribute to helping out Sacramento right now," said Torigian. "Some people that are retired and some people that can come out for two days.'
Torigian said he's been working 20 days straight, but this mission strikes a special chord.
"Morale is high here. Everyone's enjoying helping everyone out. To see it in my hometown, it's been a pretty amazing experience so far," said Torigian.
He said they're also working alongside local relief teams like the Office of Emergency Management.
"It's an amazing feeling," said Torigian. "You have people coming from across the country to help you out, and then you being here in the area is just like, this is the organization that I'm proud to belong to."
Team Rubicon is planning to stay in the Sacramento area until Jan. 28 Until then, they'll keep working, catching some rest when they can at their temporary home away from home at Cal Expo.
