Truckee tow truck drivers spring into action to rescue stranded drivers in Sierra

“They are happy when we get there to get them out; they are not happy when they get the bill."

TRUCKEE, Calif. — Truckee tow truck drivers are working around the clock in 12-hour shifts to clear more than 100 cars stuck along Interstate 80.

Some towing companies are estimating they'll pull out 200 hundred cars when everything is said and done.

“We are estimating 200 hundred cars that are stuck just from the other day,” said Mike Ram, driver with North Valley Towing.

Ram joined nine other North Valley fleet drivers on Interstate 80 pulling cars off the road. He pulled out seven cars before 10 a.m.

“There’s a lot of people in these cars," said Ram. "Some of them were there overnight, others were rescued and sent to the hospital or to the nearest hotel."

If there's no driver in the car when the tow truck arrives, then the car is impounded.

An impound lot Ram showed ABC10 was nearly full with abandoned semi-trucks.

Ram said the majority of calls are for spinouts and for people going too fast.

The other common issue is for people with four-wheel drive but city tires.

“They are happy when we get there to get them out; they are not happy when they get the bill," said Ram.

Stan Starr, a vacationer in the area and former ski patroller for 31 years in Oregon, said he's seen his fair share of storms, but this one stands out.

“I’d say this is a once in a year storm, but it could be once in three years. It’s a pretty big storm,” said Starr.
