Truckers return to I-80 after blizzard conditions in Sierra

Hundreds of truckers and drivers were caught in the blizzard before officials closed the interstate.

GOLD RUN, Calif. — The wheels of commerce are rolling again along Interstate 80. Officials reopened the roadway Monday morning.

Mohsen Hojiev said he's been sleeping in his truck for the past four days. He's finally getting back on the road after being among the truck drivers forced to wait out the storm.

"I am so lucky that I stopped here," he said.

Hundreds of truckers and drivers were caught in the blizzard before officials closed the interstate.

"They literally called every tow truck company in the area," said Nick Anderson.

Anderson said his towing company hauled four big rigs and a dozen cars to an impound lot in Gold Run through the storm.

"It got very dangerous, very treacherous. At one point, the road disappeared from us, you couldn’t tell a snow drift from cliffside," said Anderson.

For Anderson and his colleagues, it was a break-neck 48 hours that was highly profitable but also frustrating.

"Do you not watch the news? Do you not watch TV? I mean you all got social media and phones and stuff. It was all over Tik Tok and everything. Don’t come up here if you don’t need to," said Anderson.

As far as he's concerned, commerce can wait until the weather clears.

Monday night, the California Highway Patrol closed I-80 eastbound in Truckee due to a jackknifed big rig and held westbound traffic due to spun out big rigs along I-80 westbound, west of Donner Lake.
