Strong overnight storm heading to Northern California

Heavy rain, strong winds and even thunderstorms are all included in this late-night storm.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Northern California is set to get hit with a quick-moving storm Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

An area of low pressure off the coast will rapidly deepen during the day Monday and latch onto deep moisture to the south. This Atmospheric River storm will bring heavy rain to Northern California, strong winds, a few thunderstorms and initial heavy snow to Sierra passes.

This storm will not last long and is not as strong as the October storm but it will still bring impacts over the next couple of days.

Monday will start cold in the 30s and 40s then clouds will increase during the day with a high only in the upper 50s.

Starting after sunset the storm will move in. Roughly between 6-10 p.m., the storm will start producing rain, increasing winds and snowing down to about 6,000 feet.

Between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., the storm will peak with strong winds up to 30mph and stronger gusts. This window is the most likely time to see tree limbs and trees down as well as power outages.

Storm totals will range from about 0.50-1 inch for the valley and 2-4 inches for the Sierra. Snow will be difficult. We could get a quick 6-8 inches over the passes, but the snow level rise will switch to rain and driving conditions will be tough.

The storm will clear on Tuesday with some stray showers into the afternoon.

The impacts of the storm will mostly be in the middle of the night and power outages are possible. The ground is soft from recent rain and new rain followed by strong winds means tree limbs may break or some trees could even come down.

Finally, we have a chance to see thunderstorms with this system as well as lightning, strong gusts and heavy rain.

More from ABC10: The biggest storm in a week will bring heavy rain, snow, and strong winds. ABC10's Chief Meteorologist Monica Woods breaks down the forecast.
