New storm brings rain, snow and strong winds to parts of Northern California

Wind may be damaging in the Tahoe Basin and northern Sacramento Valley Monday evening into Tuesday.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A new system will bring the first rain and snow of 2022 but it will not be a very strong system except for the wind.

Monday the clouds will roll in and the valley locations will start to see a light rain move in around the evening commute home. Light on-and-off showers will continue overnight to Tuesday and early commuters can expect wet roads.

This system does not have much moisture and valley totals less than 0.10 inches will be common and 0.25-0.50 inches is expected for the Sierra Foothills.

This system will be warmer than the cycle at the end of December and areas still recovering from lower elevation snow and power outages will see rain rather than snow. Snow levels will linger around 5,000-6,000 feet.

Snow over the mountain passes should be between 4-8 inches and higher amounts for the resorts. This is enough for chain controls sometime Monday evening to Tuesday but with strong winds building whiteout conditions may exist over the passes and closures are possible.

The biggest impact of this storm will be strong wind over the ridges and into the East Side of the Sierra with gusts up to 50-60 mph for Truckee and South Lake Tahoe. This is strong enough to take down limbs, trees and create power outages.

The system will depart on Tuesday with fair weather moving in for Wednesday and most of Thursday.

A new stronger system is set for Friday with details still emerging at this time.
