SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Thunderstorms are possible across portions of Northern California today through this afternoon.
Unstable air on the backside of the cold front that passed through overnight Saturday and Sunday is to thank for the chances. The main impacts associated with the storms will be lightning, brief downpours, gusty winds, and pea size hail.
A partly cloudy sky is allowing the sun to peek through to start the day which will fuel the potential for thunderstorm activity as the day wears on. A line of storms has already rolled through Elk Grove and surrounding areas this morning, producing heavy rain and small hail.
Thunderstorm activity should stall out by sunset. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors.
Heavy snow will continue throughout the day as well, thanks to orographic uplift and the unstable air. Another 6-12" of snow is likely in the Sierra. Paired with strong winds, visibility will be low and travel will be dangerous across the Sierra. Chain controls are already in effect across the passes.
High pressure will once again take hold over California this week and there likely won't be any rain during the work week. Temperatures will be into the low to mid 60s with plenty of sunshine in the Central Valley and upper 30s to 40s in the Sierra.
Clear skies and light winds will mean cold morning temperatures once again, but won't be nearly as cold as what the region experienced last week with wind chills down into the teens in some places. Patchy fog and frost will be the main stories in what should be a fairly quiet weather week.
