SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Veterans Day storm will likely see midday rain in the valley and snow in the Sierra.
There will be some time very early to get out and about, but from roughly 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. expect steady rain that will be heavy at times. The Sierra will also see some light to moderate snow during this time, the rest of the day and several hours after sunset.
WHEN
Very early Monday morning will be dry and the best chance to make preparations ahead of the rain. This system will be strong but short-lived. Rain is set to move in with some stronger winds up to 25 mph in the valley and 50 mph in the Sierra.
We should see about 0.25-0.50" of valley rain and 2-6" of Sierra snow. While this is generally on the light side, it will be stormy with lower visibility, tricky driving and gusty wind.
At this point, it does look like there will be momentary clearing between 3-5 p.m., so there could be a window of time with dry conditions just before sunset. The wind will be breezy behind the front.
The snow level will start off around 5,800 feet in the beginning before rising to about 6,600 feet in the middle of the day then lowering again to about 5,000 feet before the snow ends. Tuesday morning will be cold in the Sierra in the 20s and teens.

IMPACT
This is not a strong storm but it does fall on a holiday, Veterans Day. This creates a few challenges with rain on a day many will have "off" for work or school. Some outdoor events related to Veterans Day like parades may also have to plan for rain.

NEED
Rain may hamper plans for Veterans Day. Some things may not possible during the heaviest period of rain. Travel will be impacted over the mountain passes with enough snow for the mountain passes for chain controls Monday and part of Tuesday. Travel will also be icy after the storm with cold temperatures.
For valley locations, it will also be cold Monday with highs in the low 60s, so most of your day will be cold in the 50s.
Tuesday will be a clear and dry day.
The end of the week needs attention as a new system looks set to arrive by Friday with more rain and snow.
