2 systems add rain and snow to the forecast to end October, start November | Weather Impact Alert Day

Light rain moves in early Halloween with another system impacting part of the weekend.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — As we transition from October to November, we will have some activity from two systems. This week includes Halloween, so it has added urgency.

WHEN

The first storm will move in overnight between Wednesday and Thursday after a pretty mild day in the 60s. The timing is mostly helpful since it's in the middle of the night. There will be some leftover rain and snow Thursday, which is Halloween. During the day, the storm is mostly clearing out. By trick-or-treat time, the valley will likely be dry. The Sierra will have some lingering rain and snow, but it should be light.

The second system arrives close to sunset Friday and lingers into early Saturday morning. There is a chance some rain and snow will linger until noon, but the totals will be getting lighter.

IMPACT

The valley will see about 0.10" of rain between Wednesday and Thursday. The valley will get much more rain out of the second system arriving Friday night.

Totals will vary, but we could see 0.25-1" of rain for the valley. Timing is middle of the night, but travel could be impacted, along with clogged drains. Early morning activities Saturday will need to be monitored for lingering light rain and wet ground.

The Sierra will get 2-4" of snow mostly overnight between Wednesday and Thursday. This may result in travel issues like chain controls.

The second round is much more significant with 6-10" of snow possible at the passes around 7,000 ft. We could get at least a few inches of snow down to 6,000 ft., including more populated areas. This amount of snow will be the largest of the season so far. It will also likely create chain control conditions on the roads. Also, some level of snow removal will be taking place Saturday like city plowing and private plowing.

NEED

The main need is to make preparations for prolonged wet weather until Saturday. Wednesday is the best time to put things away if you don't want to get them wet. Clean gutters and leaves. For travel, make sure your vehicle is ready for winter driving conditions. If it is not, be prepared to drive during periods of better weather such as Wednesday, later Thursday and Friday. Try to limit travel during peak rain and snow.
