Open or closed? Here's an update on Lake Tahoe ski resorts amid blizzard conditions

Some ski resorts are closed citing too much snow, high winds and unsafe conditions while others reopen Sunday.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — A blizzard is closing many of the Lake Tahoe and California ski areas Sunday, while some are staying open.

Resorts are citing too much snow, high winds and generally unsafe conditions. Some are open Sunday but said to expect some delays as crews get the slopes ready.

The National Weather service extended a Blizzard Warning to midnight for areas above 6,500 feet in elevation. Moderate to heavy snow and strong winds means blizzard conditions continue through Sunday. Officials are warning people not to travel to the area. Interstate 80 has been closed since Friday.

Snowfall totals are now in the 6 to 8 feet range across the passes and ski resorts, although with the high winds the snow gets blown around and can result in wind-sheltered areas getting less and wind-exposed areas getting more.

An additional 1-2 feet are expected through Wednesday morning.

🚨 SUNDAY (3/3) OPERATIONS UPDATE 🚨 from Director of Mountain Operations, Adam Ikemire: “Well, it’s feeling a bit like Groundhog Day here. The plan is the same as it’s been the past couple days with the goal of getting our team up Chair 6 first, which will allow us to do the avalanche hazard mitigation work needed to open Chairs 5 + 7. We keep saying it because it’s true: we’re grateful for your patience as the team keeps working as efficiently & safely as we can to get things open.” For real-time ops alerts throughout the day, you can use the My Epic app or text “KWupdates” to 530-302-2751 for SMS updates. Like Adam said, your gratitude goes a long way as our crews continue working around the clock to open up what we can despite wild conditions… like a literal blizzard. More to come, but in the meantime — stay safe & make sure you pack all your avy safety gear + stoke for the #KirkwoodDeep days ahead 🤙
