Foggy mornings, but cool and dry through the Christmas weekend

Seasonable weather is expected across Northern California for the holiday weekend, but a couple of storms are likely before the year is up.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — It's the time of year when the weather outside is supposed to be frightful, but the weather really isn't bad at all this Christmas weekend in Northern California! In fact, it'll be a very quiet weather weekend.

Aside from patchy dense morning fog both Saturday and Sunday mornings, there are no weather impacts for us during this busy weekend.

Cooler air is filtering into the Golden State from the north in the wake of the storm system that brought several days of rain earlier this week.

This cooler air is finally dropping us back towards where we should be for this time of the year. Average valley highs are in the middle 50s, and that's where we are this weekend.

For most of December, we've had highs in the 60s, about 5-10 degrees warmer than normal.

Very seasonal Christmas Eve with highs in the middle 50s. Good flying weather Sunday evening. Some clouds but generally merry and bright on Christmas.

Cool afternoon highs in the 50s continue through the Christmas holiday. Some clouds move overhead both Sunday and Monday, making for partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies, but we stay dry.

Sunday night weather will be good flying weather as well, so Santa and his reindeer shouldn't have any issues making the rounds in Northern California. It may be a bit foggy, but it's nothing Rudolph can't handle.

Futurecast showing rain and snow returning to Northern California on Wednesday after Christmas.

Although there isn't much time left in the year, it doesn't mean the rain chances are over. We stay dry through Christmas, but rain returns on Wednesday.

Long-range futurecast is showing heavy rain across the region for midweek with snow levels around 6,000 feet, much lower than the previous storm.

This is good news for snow lovers and ski resorts as skiers welcome in the new year with a run down the slopes.

A couple of storms that could impact Northern California are on the horizon. Here's some early things to know.

It's not just one storm, either. Models are hinting at another storm on New Year's Eve weekend and potentially another one shortly after we ring in 2024.

While it's too early to get specific about impacts, the two storms forecast for the last week of the year are looking colder. This means lower snow levels than the previous winter storm, and likely winter travel impacts along I-80 and US-50.

The bottom line is that the post-Christmas forecast is looking colder and wetter.
