CALIFORNIA, USA — A major heat wave begins Friday for Northern California as an excessive heat warning goes into effect Friday morning until 11 p.m. Sunday. Areas of central and southern California are expecting triple-digit heat starting Thursday.
A Heat Advisory has been issued for the Sierra as temperatures are expected to reach 95-108°F in the Sierra. This will take effect 11 a.m. Saturday until 11 p.m. Sunday
An Excessive Heat Warning is in the magenta shade for most valley and foothill spots beginning Saturday morning and ending either Sunday night for Northern California or Monday night toward central and southern California. 105-115°F temperatures are possible.
An Excessive Heat Watch surrounds the coastal range and coastal areas for hot temperatures ranging from 95-110°F.
A strengthening high pressure system will build over the desert southwest and head farther north. The heat dome overhead will intensify temperatures in Southern California deserts and the Southwest. Meanwhile the heat will carry similar effects into Northern California valleys, foothills, Sierra, and coastline regions.
Saturday and Sunday are expected to be the peak of the high pressure system. Temperatures around Sacramento could be as high as 110 degrees, with surrounding cities as high as 107-115 degrees, before the high weakens Monday into the low 100s.
This dangerous heat will impact most people and could cause heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion or stroke. People are urged to keep an eye on children, the elderly and pets. Watch for dizziness, sweating, nausea and weakness. Outdoor activities should be limited. During peak heat, air conditioned and cool places are advised. If anyone appears confused or unconscious in the heat, you should call 911 immediately.
Overnight lows will bring mild relief as temperatures will be in the 70s-80s.
