Dangerous blizzard conditions forcing some Lake Tahoe ski resorts to close. Check out some of the scenes | UPDATES

Ski resorts are citing too much snow, high winds and unsafe conditions. Some are hoping to open Sunday as conditions could improve from Saturday's blizzard.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — A blizzard is closing many of the Lake Tahoe and California ski areas Saturday.

Resorts are citing too much snow, high winds and generally unsafe conditions. Some are hoping to open Sunday as conditions are forecast to improve.

Blizzard conditions will exist at times in the Sierra with heavy snow and strong winds severely impacting visibility and ability to travel. Officials are warning people not to travel to the area. Interstate 80 was closed Friday overnight into Saturday.

Snow will pile up in the Sierra with 5-10 feet above the 5000 foot elevation. 1-4 feet of snow will fall for elevations between 3000-5000 feet. Snow level will lower by Sunday morning to near 1500 ft. Peak gusts have been recorded at Palisades Tahoe over 180 mph.

Current Conditions - March 2, 2024

🚨 SATURDAY (3/2) OPERATIONS UPDATE 🚨 from Director of Mountain Operations, Adam Ikemire: “Good morning everyone. We’re seeing similar conditions as yesterday but with more wind + snow overnight. Our team is focused on moving around the base area first — digging out snowmobiles & snow removal on mountain travel routes — then will look at getting up to Chair 6 + 10 to start avalanche hazard mitigation work. I don’t anticipate being able to spin any chairs this morning with the current wind speeds, but the team will give it a few hours to see what happens. We’ve got a lot of pre-work ahead of us just to get to the regular work we do on days like this, so we appreciate everyone’s patience.” Reminder that you can get real-time ops alerts using the My Epic app or via SMS (text “KWupdates” to 530-302-2751) 🎥: Chair 6 Kirkwood Lift Maintenance & Ski Patrol 🦅
