SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Many people in Northern California will wake up very early Thursday morning with the sound of pounding rain. A fast moving storm system is set to move into Northern California around midnight between Wednesday and Thursday.
The storm will have a line of heavy rain followed by steady, lighter rain that should last for a few hours in the middle of the night. This storm will produce between a quarter to half an inch of rain fairly quickly.
By Thursday morning, most of the storm will be moving south and areas like Stockton and Modesto will get a few showers close to sunrise, before the systems begins clearing later on Thursday morning.
Poor drainage will also create localized flooding on surface streets. It’s still early for leaf season and drains may get clogged and create other areas of concern as well.
For the Sierra, the snow will fall late Wednesday night into early Thursday to about 6,500 feet in elevation. The snow will drop to 5,000 feet later on Thursday.
This storm will keep lingering snow in the Sierra until Thursday afternoon. Up to a foot of snow is possible over the mountain passes and people will likely see chain controls.
People should expect delays when heading to the mountains with slower driving and possible road closures depending on the weather and safety.
The storm will be gone by Thursday night and the weekend should be dry.
