November rain totals off to an impressive start

A series of storms and atmospheric rivers brought inches of rain to Northern California.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Cities across Northern California are already reporting double if not triple the amount of rain for November than the average year. Two atmospheric rivers toward the end of the month accounted for most of the rain, with the highest and record setting daily rain for November 22nd, coming in at 2 inches.

The month kicked off with the first storm system on Nov. 1st, bringing in a weak atmospheric river. This dropped about a .30-.50" of rain from Sacramento, north.

The week of Nov. 10th to 16th brought in two more storms with .19” on November 11th and .20” for November 14th in Downtown Sacramento.

Finally, it was the second half of the month that truly gave an exceptional push to the rain totals. From November 20th- November 26th, 3.13” of rainfall was recorded downtown. This made up a majority of the precipitation for the month, bringing the total to 3.88”.

Compared to 2023, .73” of rain in November, 2024 shows about 5.3 times more rainfall downtown.

The normal or average rainfall for November in Downtown Sacramento is 1.52”. We now have a surplus of 2.36”. While impressive, it could all slow, as quickly as it begins. We would need to wait several more months to compare our water year to an above or below-average water year. This would help us decipher how minimal or severe our drought may be going into the summer months.

Other notable cities with above-average rain totals across our valley include Sacramento Executive Airport, Stockton, and Modesto.

Modesto received 1.37” in November, with the norm at .91”.
