CALIFORNIA, USA — Sacramento set a record for an all-time 24-hour rain total of 5.44 inches for Downtown Sacramento. The previous record was 5.28 inches set back in 1880.
With all the rain, it begs the question of just how long it'll be before the area needs to pick up more rainfall.
The conversation starts with California's rainy season.
California is known for long stretches of dry weather. In a typical year, we receive the most rain during the months of November to April, known as the rainy season.
How long before the area needs more rain? As of Oct. 26, 2021, Sacramento Executive Airport has picked up 6.72 inches of rainfall. In a normal water year (Oct 1 - Sept 30), the area picked up 18.14 inches of rainfall at Sacramento Executive Airport. That means Sacramento won't need to pick up more rain until January 2022.
Here's a look at the "new" average rainfall amounts Sacramento receives each month for the Sacramento Executive Airport. We've already picked up more rainfall for the months of October, November and December combined.
This definitely gives Sacramento some breathing room. Hopefully, the area will receive more winter storms during the months of November and December.
