Sacramento crews continue storm clean-up after 2nd atmospheric river hits California

Sacramento County crews and Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) crews continue to work around the clock to clean up debris and restore power.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif — Trees, debris and a death investigation are left in the wake of a powerful storm that hit Sacramento County over the weekend.

Now, residents and businesses are left to deal with the damage.

Pancake Circus has been a staple along Broadway for decades, and its retro sign took a hit following the storm.

"This morning, I came in (and) see the damage," said owner Adnan Anwar. "So, I was all like, 'Oh, my God. This is this sign (that's) been here for since 1968."

The sign is one of many things that were damaged in Sacramento County. County officials reported 145 trees were downed, many of them in Carmichael. Crews continue into the week to clean the mess.

"Crews have been working since last night into this morning, trying to clear out the trees to make sure that people on the roads have a place to drive safely," said Matt Robinson, a Sacramento County spokesman.

At the storm's peak, Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) officials say about 200,000 customers lost power. Crews are working around the clock to try and restore that power to everyone as soon as possible.

"SMUD starts with those outages that pose a public safety risk first, and then moves on to the large widespread outages considering hospitals, flood pumps and facilities with large community impact before it moves on to the smaller scattered outages," said Gamaliel Ortiz, a SMUD spokesman.

High winds caused a delay in SMUD response times, he said.

"There were moments during these powerful winds where crews needed to kind of hold back a little bit on their work in order to work safely," Ortiz said.

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a state of emergency for Southern California. Sacramento County officials said that is not the case here, but they are continuing to monitor the weather and asking residents to remain patient while repairs are made.
