Sacramento sets a new heat record

We've had more triple-digit days this year than any year on record, dating back to 1878.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — It's no secret that the weather was very hot this summer, and now, there's a hot start to fall in Sacramento.

Sacramento had a record average high temperature of 97°, 37 triple-digit days, and five 110°+ days this summer (June 1 - August 31), which was more than any previous summer.

But the heat didn't end once we hit September. September 2024 has seen an additional eight days with a high temperature of at least 100°.

The 100° heat in Sacramento Tuesday afternoon was a milestone. It was the area's 45th triple-digit day of the year. That breaks the tie with 2022 and means 2024 now stands alone as the year with the most triple digit days on record in Downtown Sacramento.

  • 45 days in 2024
  • 44 days in 2022
  • 41 days in 1988
  • 38 days in 2020, 1996, and 1984

To put the heat in perspective, since 1990, the average number of triple-digit days in a calendar year is 24. We just about doubled that this year with a total of 45.

Tuesday's highs were also in record territory with Stockton setting a new daily record of 102°. This breaks the previous record of 99° set in 1936.

Unfortunately, triple-digit heat is becoming more common in Sacramento thanks to climate change. At the start of the 1900s, the average number of 100°+ days in a year was just six. 1888 had 20 triple-digit days, which was virtually unheard of. It was another 41 years before Sacramento had that many hundred-degree days again.
