Veterans Day storm brings measurable rain to valley, snow to Sierra

Late October and early November storms could help ski resorts open earlier.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A line of showers returned Monday with plenty of moisture.

Valley spots ultimately saw as much as .10"-.35" of rain while the foothills received .25-50" of rain.

The fast-moving storm system arrived around 8:00 a.m. but it moved out around 4:00 p.m., moving from the northwest to the southeast with gusts along the front line.

A Weather Impact Alert was issued for the Sierra, and snow caused chain controls over Highway 50 and I-80 with accidents and spinouts.

New Water Year Rain Totals

Some light storms have moved across Northern California as of October, but they haven't been carrying as much precipitation to keep us par for the course this water year. The water year began on Oct. 1, 2024 and will last through Sept. 30, 2025.

As of Nov. 12, valley locations have received anywhere from a quarter inch to three quarters of an inch of rain the entire water year, which so far has been a total of 6 weeks. The normal rain water this time of year is anywhere from .85"-1.45" of rainfall.

Most locations are below the normal by a half inch to almost an inch of rain.

Total Snowfall

The storms haven't been particularly significant, but there have been increasing low pressure systems in the forecast, leading meteorologists to believe we are on track for average water year conditions.

While the rain isn't on track, the snowfall is looking better. To date, as of Nov. 12, 2024, the Central Sierra Snow Lab has recorded 13.58 inches of snow since Oct. 1. The median snowfall total is 15.65", behind just over 2 inches at 2.07" from normal.

More Storms Ahead

Upcoming storm systems expected Nov. 13 and Nov. 15 are forecast to bring an additional 4-8 inches of snow to the Central Sierra Snow Lab.

If those numbers hold true, the new median snowfall of 17.91" for Saturday Nov. 17 is expected to be surpassed. The new total would be closer to 21" if an additional 8 inches is recorded.
