CALIFORNIA, USA — Winter weather is back as rain and snow continue in Northern California through Wednesday.
The rain finally started to taper off in the valley after sundown Tuesday, though showers lingered throughout the overnight hours. Rainfall totals will be highly dependent on which areas saw thunderstorms, but generally looking for 1 to 2 inches of rain in the valley, especially along and east of Interstate 5.
Snowfall continues into the overnight hours, finally letting up by the Wednesday morning commute. Snow showers will linger in the Sierra until lunchtime Wednesday.
When all is said and done, widespread snowfall totals of 24 to 48 inches are expected for areas above 4,000 feet, with the highest peaks and passes south of Highway 50 potentially seeing 50 inches or more. It's a good start to the water year and good news for ski resorts as they prepare to open for the season.
Road Conditions
Snow in the mountains Wednesday could impact commute times as roads are slick. Drivers on I-80 or US-50 should be prepared for chain controls in the Sierra. Drivers on I-5 and in the valley should increase the following distance and reduce speeds to account for any lingering rain.
Interstate 80
- Boca to Drum Forebay: Chain controls are in effect for all vehicles except four-wheel/all-wheel drive or with snow tires on all wheels
Highway 50
- Pollock Pines to Meyers: Chain controls are in effect for all vehicles except four-wheel/all-wheel drive or with snow tires on all wheels
School Closures
Pollock Pines Elementary School District
All schools in the Pollock Pines Elementary School District are closed Wednesday because of unsafe road conditions.
