'Sound off?' More like 'tee off': Military members play free at WildHawk Golf Club for Veterans Day

The Veterans' Golf Program is letting veterans and active duty military members play free at WildHawk Golf Club. The goal? Fostering a community of support.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Veterans Day is the time of year where the country honors those who are still with us who fought for our freedoms. In order to celebrate those men and women, WildHawk Golf Club is pairing up with the Veterans' Golf Program so veterans and active duty military members get to play free on Veterans Day.

ABC10's Mark S. Allen spoke with some of the veterans at WildHawk Golf Club to learn more about the Veterans' Golf Program and the way it helps those who served.

HERE ARE 3 THINGS TO KNOW:

  1. Veterans play free! WildHawk is letting vets and active duty military members play free with all green fees waived, not including the cart. Those who want to join in on the fun must call (916) 688-4653 to reserve a time on the course.

  2. The goal of the event is to help veterans who may need help or human connection to meet others like them.

"100% of it goes towards local vets. It helps them," explained veteran and golfer Paul Odinger. "We do food, clothing, finances, but golf just brings us in as a modality so that we can build a family. That's really what is important."

  3. The Veterans' Golf Program puts all proceeds back into local veterans,.

"This money goes to the Veterans' Golf Program. It helps foster the wellbeing of veterans mentally, emotionally, and financially," explained Sterling Owens, a retired US Army veteran and the director of the Veterans' Golf Tournament. "We'd like for the community, not just veterans but the community around here, get involved and help us as we reach out to other veterans."
