13-year-old ordered to stay in juvenile detention for 6 years after fatal Woodland crash

The teenager was convicted on 14 total counts including: vehicular manslaughter, evading police, driving without a license, stealing a car and more, officials say.

WOODLAND, Calif. — The 13-year-old who killed two people in an in April 2023 Woodland crash was ordered by a judge Friday to stay in juvenile court until he turns 19 years old, according to the Yolo County District Attorney's Office.

The teenager was convicted on 14 total counts including: vehicular manslaughter, evading police, driving without a license, stealing a car and endangering health of a child, the DA's office says. The ruling came from a Yolo County Superior Court judge after the year-long trial.

Restitution was ordered for four of the other victims in the crash, amounting to $11,195.82, but still needs to be ordered for the other six victims.

CASE HISTORY

The crash happened April 8, 2023 near Court and College streets in Woodland.

Police say an officer saw a vehicle being driven erratically and they tried to pull it over. It ended at the intersection when the car collided with two other vehicles, causing them to catch fire.

One person died at the scene while almost a dozen other people were injured.

Police later said the driver that caused the crash was a 13-year-old boy driving a car he stole from a family member.

The woman who died that day was identified by her childhood friend as Tina Vital. ABC10 learned Vital had just attended a Celebration of Life for another longtime friend before the crash happened.

Vital’s granddaughter, 4-year-old Adalina, died days later from her injuries in the crash.
