Alleged DUI driver leaves officer with major injuries after crash in Sutter County

A CHP officer had major injuries after being hit by an alleged DUI driver in Sutter County.

SUTTER COUNTY, Calif — Update: 6:20 p.m.

CHP officers arrested Lucas Julian Nelson, 21, after an alleged DUI crash that left a CHP officer with major injuries in Sutter County.

Nelson was charged with DUI and is being held on a $50,000 bail.

On Saturday, a CHP officer was seriously injured after a crash involving an alleged DUI driver.

According to CHP, the crash happened around 1:11 a.m. as officers were directing traffic at Highway 99 and Lomo Crossing due to a malfunctioning railroad crossing sign.

CHP said a gray SUV was going at a high rate of speed and hit an officer after failing to stop for the railroad crossing sign.

The officer was taken to the hospital with major injuries, and CHP arrested the driver on a suspicion of driving under the influence.
