SACRAMENTO, Calif — One arrest was made in connection to a string of burglaries impacting downtown Sacramento businesses, but other investigations are just getting started.
The brazen burglaries in downtown Sacramento have been caught on camera.
In a security video from Mikuni, two thieves can be seen kicking in the safe of Mikuni's downtown location. They ran out of the restaurant, committing the crime without even bothering to cover their faces.
Owner Taro Arai said they lost thousands just after midnight on August 26.
“We are so, I don’t want to say used to it, but we’ve been through ups and downs like looting, and there are so many things that have happened in the past and the first thing I said was, 'Did anyone get hurt?'” Arai said.
Arai has nine different locations and has experienced break-ins at two other locations.
“The community has been amazing they have been helping us, supporting us and they have a concern for us too, so we just have to keep doing our best,” Arai said.
However, Mikuni is not the only downtown business broken into.
Sacramento Police arrested 61-year-old Bobby McBride on suspicion of burglary. Police said he also broke into Ace Gyro’s and Hook & Ladder.
Sgt. Anthony Gamble, spokesperson with the Sacramento Police Department, said the burglaries are prolific.
“It’s something we are constantly behind the curve on, right? He gets out. He commits a crime. We have to go and we have to find him,” Gamble said.
Police said they don’t want to speculate on the recent uptick, including whether they are crimes of opportunity or a sign of more desperate financial times.
“It could be all of those things. It could be crime of opportunity. A lot of times when you see a burglary, that’s what it is,” Gamble said.
Sacramento police said they are just beginning their investigation into the Mikuni burglary, but businesses having surveillance video is a huge help to the investigations.
