Fairfield neighborhood on edge after break-in, assault

Police say the victim was home alone when a man forced his way inside her home.

FAIRFIELD, Calif. — March 14 Update: Fairfield home invasion investigation concludes, police say no crime was committed and they were given incorrect information

The Fairfield Police Department area looking for a man they say broke into a woman’s home and sexually assaulted her Wednesday evening.

It happened at a home near Peabody Road and Gramercy Circle in Fairfield, prompting officers to patrol the area while the investigation continues.

Resident in the area, like Sharon, say they were shocked by the police presence Friday.

“Nothing has ever happened in our community so it’s a big shock. We are all pretty shocked” she said.

Police say the victim was home alone when the man forced his way inside her home. Investigators describe the suspect as a 25-year old, thin man with a brown beard who did not know the victim.

Sharon, who lives nearby, saw police at work, collecting evidence both Wednesday and Thursday nights.

“It’s so close to home, we always look out for our neighbors,” said Sharon.

Fellow neighbor Sony agreed saying they no longer let their kids open the front doors.

“This could happen to anyone, so it’s very scary for us,” said Sony.

Sony says her children normally play out front after school.

“Nothing happens here, I’ve been here almost six years this is the first time I’ve heard of something happening,” said Sony.

While the search for the suspect continues, Fairfield police are asking residents to look through their security footage for anything they think could help police and their investigation.

“We have our alarm system, we have our cameras so we actually looked through our cameras to see if we could see anything but we couldn’t,” said Sharon.

Police say they’ll have extra patrols in the neighborhood — something residents say they're thankful for.

“I hope they catch him fast because we don’t want this to happen to someone else, and we hope our neighbor is okay too,” said Sharon.

Anyone with information that could help investigators identify the suspect or see anything suspicious to contact them at 707-428-7300.
