SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — Many are still searching for answers after the death of a 10-year-old boy, who the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said was shot and killed by another 10-year-old.
"To hear about a 10-year-old shooting another 10-year-old is very sad," said Aaron Cardoza, president of Brother to Brother, a community-based organization mentoring at-risk youth and young men. "Guns are not toys; this ain't Fortnite. These are guns that you shoot that gun, the bullet never comes back."
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said 10-year-old Keith Frierson was shot and killed on Saturday in a parking lot in North Sacramento by another 10-year-old boy after the child found a gun in his father's car.
The 10-year-old boy and his father, 53-year-old Arkete Davis, were arrested Sunday morning in connection with the shooting. Davis is accused of trying to dispose of the weapon in a trashcan. The weapon was reported stolen in 2017.
Davis' son is accused of murder. He was taken to the Sacramento County Youth Detention Center.
Frierson's family said the boy who shot Keith was a neighborhood friend and it all happened after a bike race.
The community is still trying to process the tragic news. Family and friends gathered together for a vigil in honor of Frierson on Monday.
Cardoza urges parents to keep an eye on their kids and keep guns out of their hands.
"Pay attention to your kids. If you got guns in the house, make sure they're locked up, make sure that the kid can't get access to a gun, especially a 10-year-old kid," Cardoza said.
Davis is set to appear in court on Wednesday. He faces charges related to having a stolen firearm, endangering the life of a child and being an accessory after the crime.
