SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento police are now taking their investigation of a deadly downtown shooting to America's Most Wanted.
Nearly two years ago, 31-year-old high school football coach Greg "Najee" Grimes was shot and killed outside of a Sacramento nightclub on 15th and L streets.
He was well known in the community for giving back and working with students.
Now, police and his family are asking the public to help find 29-year-old Tahje Michael, who police say could be connected to the case.
"Somebody needs to step forward. That's what we're hoping for. That's what we're believing is going to happen,” said Deborah Grimes, Greg Najee Grimes’ mother. “This is not a game. There is no coming back from death. There really isn't it. He was our only son. So this opportunity is an opportunity for justice for him."
Sacramento Police Department Public Information Officer Anthony Gamble says the investigation has been ongoing and they’re taking it to the national level due to the “great deal of concern for the community” and concern for the Grimes family.
Police believe Michael is armed and dangerous and are encouraging him to come forward to help officers “figure out what happened and get your side of the story,” said Gamble.
Grimes’ family has launched the Greg "Najee" Grimes 212 Anchor Foundation to provide scholarships to young athletes, raise awareness to gun violence and hold workshops on life saving tools in the event of an emergency.
“Whatever it is. We're doing something to keep our city resilient," said Deborah Grimes. “We want justice. Bottom line."
Authorities are calling on anyone with information to contact their dispatch center at 916-808-5471.
