SACRAMENTO, California — A South Sacramento nightclub is choosing to close for two weeks after a deadly double shooting over the weekend.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office says the double shooting started as a fight between a group of people leaving Sacto By Night as it was closing around 1:45 a.m. Sunday.
Deputies say it was a group of gang members who refused to leave at closing time. Employees got all the other people out of the venue, but then a fight between the gang members started in the parking lot. Deputies say at least one of the gang members shot two people during the fight and both died at the scene.
One of them was identified by family as 23-year-old Ryu Kai Her. His mother Mee Yang said her son was "just at the wrong place at the wrong time."
The nightclub identified the other victim as its owner, Ben Do.
The nightclub issued a news release Wednesday saying more than 90% of their customers were gone at the time and security was escorting the remaining people out of the nightclub.
"The incident had no altercations inside or outside our business premises. It all happened quickly and unexpectedly. We are entirely unaware of the motive or reason behind the senseless shooting," the nightclub said.
The nightclub also says the gunfire came from a nearby vehicle parked on Governors Circle, a detail investigators have yet to release or confirm.
The sheriff's office says the California Highway Patrol detained suspects connected to the shooting in a traffic stop near the scene and recovered multiple weapons. Their identities will be released when charges are filed, the sheriff's office said.
Sacto By Night described Do as a husband with three children.
"He was a good person, well-regarded by everyone, with no animosity in his relationships therefore, we announce a temporary suspension of operations for two weeks to respect the loss suffered by both victims' families," the nightclub said.
