Police arrest man accused of decapitating relative in Santa Rosa

Authorities said the suspect has ties to the San Joaquin Valley.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A nearly two-day-long manhunt for a man accused of beheading his own relative and leaving her decapitated body inside a Santa Rosa home ended Saturday morning.

Officers with the Santa Rosa Police Department said they arrested 24-year-old Luis Gustavo Aroyo-Lopez in San Francisco Saturday morning.

Investigators believe Aroyo-Lopez killed and decapitated a female relative, then left her body inside a home on Pomo Trail. Authorities made the discovery around 3:40 p.m. Thursday and classified the case as a homicide.

Police said Aroyo-Lopez may have taken his relative's head with him when he allegedly left the home.

It's unclear if the woman's head has been located. While authorities were still searching for Aroyo-Lopez, they noted that he had relatives in the San Joaquin Valley area, but were unsure of whether he would be going there or how he was able to travel.

According to Santa Rosa Police, Aroyo-Lopez had recently been released from prison after serving time for charges of assault with a deadly weapon and weapons possession. He was reportedly on community supervision at the time of the homicide.
