SACRAMENTO, Calif — The search is on for a shooter after a woman was killed in a shopping center in Sacramento's Pocket neighborhood.
The shooting happened around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Lake Crest Village Shopping Center. Employees and visitors who frequent the area for eating and shopping were shocked to hear a woman lost her life.
They said the area is known to be safe and they're hoping it doesn't stop people from coming around.
A shopping center employee says the shooting happened in a parking lot near Jimboy's Tacos. A window at the US Bank nearby was boarded up after the incident.
But residents say a shooting isn't usually something they worry about.
"It's a safe place to live. The whole Pocket area would be. You ask anybody that lives in here, and they say, 'Well, the Pocket area is a nice safe place to live. Good place to raise kids."
Kyle Tsztoo, who grew up in the Pocket neighborhood, says a shooting isn't something they typically experience in the area.
"I mean, we've had burglaries and stuff like that. We may have had a few people hurt in this neighborhood but never something like this," said Tsztoo.
Sacramento police say they're working on follow-up interviews with witnesses.
As they investigate, they're also trying to determine the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
The woman's identity is not being released until next of kin are notified. It's also not known what she was doing there at the time.
In the meantime, some people want to see more done to keep employees in the area safe.
"In the night right here, I need the security because it's very scary for everybody, you know," said Jimboy's employee Martha Gonzales.
It's a sentiment neighbors agree with.
"They need to be roaming the area more so people are not tempted to do things here. They need to be roaming the streets more," said Tsztoo.
