Yuba County deputies on paid leave after chase, deadly shootout with suspect

The sheriff's office says it started as a traffic stop, escalated into a chase and ultimately a shootout with the suspect after he started firing at deputies.

MARYSVILLE, Calif. — The Yuba County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a chase turned into a deadly shootout with law enforcement Tuesday night.

Investigators say it started as a normal traffic stop at Shadowbrook Trail in Browns Valley before becoming a 30-minute chase toward Marysville when the driver didn’t stop.

“It turned into an officer-involved shooting with multiple deputies involved,” said sheriff’s office spokesperson Katy Goodson.

The sheriff’s office says the man that led deputies on a chase started firing at deputies after his vehicle became disabled, leading to a shootout. The driver was hit and pronounced dead at the scene.

Judith Lucatero has lived in the area for 18 years and said they heard the sirens.

“We saw the lights and then heard the shots, like two shots, and then like 10 or more one after the other,” Lucatero said.

The sheriff’s office says multiple deputies fired their weapons, but an exact total hasn’t been officially released yet.

Highway 20 was closed in both directions for nearly 12 hours before reopening around 11 a.m. Wednesday.

“The shooting is like the first bad thing to happen here, and we’ve lived here 18 years and nothing like this has happened before,” Lucatero said.

Parents were able to take backroads to get their kids to school since the highway was shut down.

Sana Battaglia has three children at the elementary school and says the school day was normal.

“It just hits closer to home, I mean everyone has anxiety,” Battaglia said.

None of the law enforcement officers involved in the chase and shooting were injured. They are, however, on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues.

The man who was shot and killed has not been identified yet.
