Man pleads guilty in crash that killed Lindhurst High School assistant football coach

The 50-year-old pleaded guilty to murder, driving under the influence causing injury and felony hit-and-run, the district attorney's office said.

YUBA COUNTY, Calif. — A man pleaded guilty Friday to several charges in a crash that left a Lindhurst High School assistant football coach dead in February 2024.

The Yuba County District Attorney's Office said Larry Lee Anderson Jr., of Plumas Lake, is set to be sentenced on Sept. 11 to an agreed term of 15 years to life.

The 50-year-old pleaded guilty to murder, driving under the influence causing injury and felony hit-and-run, the district attorney's office said in an update Monday. He faced a maximum of 18 years to life.

Shane Bunn, 34, of Marysville, was identified as the man killed in the crash near Olivehurst.

"I am thankful Mr. Anderson was willing to accept responsibility for his actions and spare Mr. Bunn's family the agony and delays of a trial," said Yuba County District Attorney Clint Curry.

Lindhurst High School Principal Merrill Grant said Bunn was an assistant football coach in their Blazer program. While he wasn't employed by the school district, he was a 2008 graduate of Lindhurst High.

"The entire Lindhurst school community is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Shane Bunn," Grant told ABC10 in a statement. "He was first a husband and father but he was beloved by his football family and both players and coaches are devastated."

Case History

The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 8 p.m. Feb. 26 in Yuba County along Feather River Boulevard, north of Murphy Road. The crash involved four vehicles.

A BMW was heading southbound on Feather River Boulevard with its hazard lights flashing. A white Nissan Altima was directly behind the BMW.

A Honda CRV was heading southbound in the northbound lane to pass the BMW and the Altima.

A Toyota Corolla was traveling southbound behind all three cars and tried to pass them by driving between the CRV and the Altima, sideswiping the Altima and the BMW in the process.

The Corolla rear-ended the CRV, which went down a ditch embankment and collided with a concrete block culvert. The driver of the CRV, Bunn, died at the scene.

The driver of the Corolla, identified as 50-year-old Larry Lee Anderson Jr. of Plumas Lake, left the scene. He was found hiding hours later, according to the district attorney's office. They took a blood test nearly six hours after the crash, and Anderson's blood alcohol content was still double the legal limit.

Anderson was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, among other charges.

There were three people in the Nissan Altima including a 29-year-old woman, a 13-year-old teenager and a 4-year-old child, all from Modesto.

CHP said alcohol was a factor in the crash.
