Arden Fair mall talks redevelopment plan to meet ‘evolving needs’ of Sacramento

One mall spokesman said the shopping center began its process of moving existing tenants to accommodate the first phase of re-envisioning in January.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Arden Fair mall is undergoing what its management calls a “re-envisioning” of the shopping center, which includes welcoming Uniqlo and H&M this fall.

Nathan Spradlin, a mall spokesman, said the shopping center began its process of moving existing tenants to accommodate the first phase of re-envisioning in January.

“We anticipate Uniqlo and H&M opening this fall,” Spradlin said. “Uniqlo and H&M are the next big steps, but Arden Fair has always been in a state of growth since opening in 1957.”

The Uniqlo location will be an 11,500 square-foot space, taking portions of the former J. Crew, Gap and Armani Exchange spaces, he said. H&M will occupy an expansive 18,000 square-foot space next to Macy’s on the lower level, replacing Lane Bryant, New York & Co. and Loft

Uniqlo is a clothing company originally founded in Yamaguchi, Japan, in 1949 as a textiles manufacturer. Its first store opened June 1984. The Arden Fair mall location will be the company’s 20th in California.

H&M was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1947. It has 4,338 stores worldwide, and 745 are in North and South America. Sacramento-area locations include one at the Westfield Galleria in Roseville and another at the Palladio at Broadstone in Folsom.

“These two brands are aligned with the Sacramento market, and this is just the beginning of a larger redevelopment plan to meet the evolving needs of our city,” Spradlin said.

Spradlin said he is excited the community now gets to see what’s been in the planning stages for years. The mall sees close to 9 million shoppers annually, and there is so much opportunity to see those numbers grow, he said.

“We recognize our role beyond commerce as a needed community gather point and will continue to strive to find new ways and new programs that meet the needs of Sacramento,” he said.
