Storm Latest: Chain controls on I-80 | Thursday's updates

The storm is leading to chain controls on I-80. Valley residents can prepare for more days of rain with sandbags.

CALIFORNIA, USA — Weather conditions caused by the storm are causing delays or chain controls in the northern part of California and the Sierra Nevada mountains, especially between Lake Tahoe and Sacramento. Be prepared for travel delays, chain controls and possible road closures.

Interstate 80

  • Eastbound:  Chain controls Nyack to Truckee (as of 8:25 a.m.)
  • Westbound:  Chain Controls From Donner Interchange to Nyack (as of 8:25 a.m.)

Highway 50

  • Both ways of traffic are not impacted by weather conditions (as of 8:25 a.m.)

Valley residents also must be prepared for wet roads and cold conditions as a storm moves across the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys, prompting officials to act and caution people to prepare.

With the amount of project rainfall flooding becomes a major concern, Sacramento city officials told ABC10 they have been preparing for such a storm for months bringing in additional sandbags.

“That way, if we do have a series of storms and all of a sudden, we start to see the floods like we did in 2023, people aren't rushing here at the last second to grab sandbags and find out that there are none left,” said Sacramento County Public Information Manager Matt Robinson.

Sacramento County offers sandbag pickup at the following locations:

  • Branch Center (3847 Branch Center Road)
  • Orangevale Community Center (6826 Hazel  Avenue)
  • Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Station #116 (7995 Elwyn Avenue)

Residents are advised to clear gutters and storm drains to prevent blockage.
