CERES, Calif. — A high school teenager is dead after a crash not far from Central Valley High School in Ceres on Wednesday afternoon.
Ceres police said the car was carrying four Central Valley High School teenagers when it hit a power pole and stopped next to a tree on the 4200 block of Blaker Road around 3:02 p.m.
In Thursday news release from Sgt. Greg Yotsuya, he said the driver lost control of the car while passing another northbound vehicle.
Yotsuya said one of the teenagers was partially ejected from the car after the crash and was pronounced dead at the crash site. The other three teenagers had minor to moderate injuries and were taken to local hospitals.
Police originally believed the teenager killed in the crash was 17 years old, however, Yotsuya confirmed in an update that the boy was 16 years old and was the driver side rear passenger.

While the investigation is still ongoing, police say speed appears to be a factor. Police say it doesn't appear drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.
