FAIR OAKS, Calif. — Citrus Heights councilmembers selected a new mayor and vice mayor Wednesday after Mayor Bret Daniels announced he was leaving California.
Council voted to select Dr. Jayna Karpinski-Costa as mayor and MariJane-Lopez Taff as Vice mayor, effective immediately. The two will serve for the next three months.
The District 1 city council seat will remain empty until the November election.
Daniels previously told ABC10 he intends to move his family out of California to Kentucky. He said his seven-year-old daughter was the biggest reason why the family made the decision, and he blamed the environment created by state lawmakers.
“It is mainly in the legislature and the deterioration of parental rights, what is going on in schools and just things like that. The value of your money, your dollar, just that combination of things that just has created a burden,” Daniels said.
