Costco opens in Linda ahead of Thanksgiving

A line of eager customers wrapped around the new Costco ahead of the grand opening Wednesday morning.

CALIFORNIA, USA — After a long wait, families in Linda, California are shopping at a new Costco just in time for Thanksgiving.

It comes after a series of delays pushed back the project, located on North Beale Road, that community leaders are calling a big economic opportunity for the entire region.

"Maybe to everyone else, it's just one store, but for any community, it's jobs, it's an opportunity, it's a draw for other national brands,” Rachel Abbott, spokesperson for Yuba County, said. “This is really bigger than Costco, and just shows that you the county's investing in our community. And we're excited to see that larger businesses and retailers and even people moving from out of the area see our value because we've known it this whole time.”

A line of eager customers wrapped around the new facility ahead of the grand opening Wednesday morning, with residents calling the new development a welcomed addition to the Marysville area.

“I’m just excited,” Zina Blessett said. “We need something like this because we have to drive all the way to either Yuba City or Roseville to go to Costco or Sam's Club.”

The lot sat vacant for more than three decades after a levee collapse sent floodwaters through the Peach Tree Mall, and longtime residents like Lonny Ownbey said it’s nice to finally see something new in its place after all these years.

“It’s going be a huge economic boom to this county that's for sure,” Ownbey said. “This area used to be the Peach Tree Mall, and now it's, you know, some new life.”

The grand opening comes a few weeks behind schedule as the food store chain waited for PG&E equipment to arrive and power the site that had been running on generators.

It will normally be open 10 a.m. through 6 p.m. but is closed for Thanksgiving. Here's a list of grocery stores open on Thanksgiving.
