TRACY, Calif. — An Elk Grove man was identified as the worker who died after falling into a silo at a Tracy sugar plant, San Joaquin County officials said Tuesday.
Dean Melavic, 53, fell into a large silo at the Holly Sugar plant near Holly Drive and Sugar Road. Fire officials received reports of his fall around 10:20 a.m. on Saturday, according to the South San Joaquin County Fire Authority.
Melavic fell nearly 80 feet into machinery at the bottom of the silo, officials said. He did not survive.
Over the course of an hour, 16 first responders developed plans and used a rope system to get to Melavic. The cause of the fall is under investigation, according to fire officials. OSHA is also investigating the incident.
