Gregg Umipeg identified as Sacramento man allegedly killed by 13-year-old in stolen car

Police said Umipeg was hit by the 13-year-old while turning onto Franklin Boulevard in Elk Grove.

ELK GROVE, Calif. — The man allegedly hit and killed by a 13-year-old driving a stolen car in Elk Grove was identified as Gregg Umipeg, 55, of Sacramento.

The man's identity was confirmed by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office Tuesday.

Umipeg died after he was hit by a suspected stolen car at Laguna and Franklin boulevards Monday night.

Prior to the crash, Elk Grove Police Department responded to reports of a stolen car around 9:20 p.m. Monday near Grant Line Road and Highway 99. When officers found the car, they tried to pull the driver over but a chase started.

The car went into a neighborhood and officers ultimately lost sight of it. As the driver was leaving the neighborhood on Laguna Boulevard, it hit a Nissan being driven by Umipeg in the intersection turning onto Franklin Boulevard.

Umipeg was taken to a hospital where he later died.

According to police, the driver of the stolen car was a 13-year-old. He was taken to a hospital and was later arrested on suspicion of several charges including felony evading and felony evading resulting in serious injury or death. He was booked into Juvenile Hall.
