Folsom's Jake Browning renews contract with Bengals for 2 more NFL seasons

Jake Browning, who filled in for Joe Burrow last season after he suffered a torn ligament in his right wrist, re-signed with the team in a two-year contract.

FOLSOM, Calif. — Folsom native Jake Browning, who filled in for Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow last season after he suffered a torn ligament in his right wrist, re-signed with the team Tuesday.

Browning, 28, signed a two-year contract through the 2025 season, according to a post by the Bengals on X, formerly Twitter. He played seven full games in Burrow’s position starting on Nov. 26, 2023; the Bengals won four games and lost three with Browning at the helm.

He finished the season by completing 70.3% of his passes for 1,936 yards, 12 touchdowns and 7 interceptions, according to ESPN. Mathematically, the team lost their chance to make the playoffs when it lost to the Kansas City Chiefs on Dec. 31, 2023.

Browning has been on Cincinnati’s practice squad since 2021, according to ESPN. He set school records at the University of Washington and became a college free agent signee of the Minnesota Vikings in 2019.

He played for Folsom High School and early during childhood with the school’s Junior Bulldogs program. While playing for Folsom, he set California prep records with 1,708 career pass attempts, 1,191 completions, 16,755 passing yards and 229 touchdowns, according to ESPN.

Browning’s renewal announcement comes on the four-year anniversary of Cincinnati drafting Burrow, who was the first overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Folsom alum told ABC10 in January he would be surprised if he’s not back with the Bengals in the 2024-2025 season.

“I put out a lot of tape. (I’m) watching that tape, seeing what I can do to get better and keep trying to improve and focus on that,” he said. “Whenever that opportunity comes (I’ll) be ready for it…I think it's a unique situation because obviously Joe Burrow is the franchise guy.”
