Lodi firefighters honored for life-saving efforts in Magnolia house fire

“We wanted to take a moment to thank our people for what they do and to thank them for their courage and heroism."

LODI, Calif. — Several members of the Lodi Fire Department were honored at a ceremony Wednesday morning for their involvement in battling a house fire in July.

Nine firefighters were awarded for their life-saving efforts at a fire that happened on Magnolia Court on July 23. The fire resulted in a man’s death, but firefighters were able to rescue a woman, who has since recovered.

The ceremony was held by the Lodi Fire Department and firefighters that were honored are Dave Mettler, Grant Gibson, Ivan Oseguera, Dave Rabara, Mason Bandre, Jordan Pinasco, Anthony Moore, John Rowlands and Mitch Walding. Mettler, and Moore were the only honorees not at the ceremony.

Lodi Fire Chief Ken Johnson told ABC10 that the act of heroism came after several of the departments firefighters “immediately engaged” under high heat and heavy smoke conditions.

“They were able to rescue the two victims and with one of the victims surviving to this day,” Johnson said. “So we wanted to take a moment to thank our people for what they do and to thank them for their courage and heroism and memorialize a woman, who has been saved and is going to be able to live out more days in her life.”

When firefighters arrived on scene, officials said they pulled a woman out from the blaze after they saw “heavy fire and smoke conditions.”

Firefighters also found a man at the fire, but he died at the scene. The woman who was rescued was taken to the hospital.

The fire started in two rooms of the house, which was later contained. The cause of the fire is unknown. An investigation of the fire was launched by officials.
