Man arrested, accused of murder after deadly shooting at Lake Berryessa

Investigators say the deadly shooting happened after a brawl between two groups of people who didn't know each other at the lake.

NAPA COUNTY, Calif. — A Napa County man is facing a murder charge after a deadly shooting at Lake Berryessa over the weekend.

According to the Napa County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect is 25-year-old Gabriel James Chavez of American Canyon.

He’s accused of murder and expected to appear in court Tuesday.

According to deputies, 39-year-old Andres Fabian Sandoval Garcia, of Vallejo, was killed in Saturday’s brawl between two groups on the west shore of the lake.

It’s not clear how the fight started, but investigators say the two groups didn’t know each other.

At some point, Chavez allegedly retrieved a gun from his vehicle and killed Garcia. He left the scene and was detained north of the lake.

It is unclear exactly how many people were hurt, but several people were taken to the hospital for their injuries.
