Man shot, killed by Ceres police officer identified

The officer accused of shooting him has not been identified yet.

CERES, Calif. — The man shot and killed by a Ceres police officer Friday afternoon has been identified.

According to the Ceres Police Department, he was 22-year-old Alexander Yepez Ortega of Ceres.

Police say it started around 11:40 a.m. Friday when officers were called to a home on Dirk Court for a report of a man wielding a knife at family members.

Police found the suspect, Alexander Ortega, had a warrant out for his arrest in Modesto.

When police arrived, Ortega ran through the yards of nearby homes and officers found him hiding in a vehicle on 6th Street about 30 minutes later.

Police say they tried to detain him and at some point, he was shot by at least one officer. Ortega died at the scene.

The officer accused of shooting him has not been identified yet. A police officer was taken to the hospital with a non-life-threatening stab wound.
