SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — The El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office said a man who shot and killed a black bear in South Lake Tahoe will not face charges.
The office said it came to that conclusion after an independent review of the evidence.
It comes after the May 27 shooting at the man’s home in South Lake Tahoe.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife said the 75-85 pound bear entered the home through a back door. The man shouted and waved his arms, but the bear started huffing and went toward the man’s dog.
The man grabbed a rifle and shot the bear twice. It left the home, climbed a tree, fell and the man said it looked like it was suffering so he shot it to euthanize it before calling 911.
The evidence the office went through to issue its determination included the 911 call, observations of the CDFW officers, an interview with the suspect, an interview with a neighbor and the bullet wounds of the bear.
The district attorney’s office also said it received comments from the public alleging previous run ins with the suspect and determined them to be unfounded.
