Modesto police investigate 2 fatal traffic incidents within 12 hours of each other

Around 8:15 a.m. Sunday and 11:30 p.m. Saturday, the Modesto Police Department responded to separate reports of fatal traffic incidents about five miles apart.

MODESTO, Calif. — Modesto police are investigating Sunday two fatal traffic incidents that occurred within 12 hours of each other and were about five miles apart.

Around 8:15 a.m. Sunday and 11:30 p.m. Saturday, the Modesto Police Department responded to separate reports of fatal traffic incidents.

Fatal vehicle crash

The department said on Facebook around 8:15 a.m. Sunday it was looking into a fatal crash on West Hatch Road west of Monticello Avenue.

West Hatch Road was blocked between Monticello Avenue and Ustick Road, but as of around 11:30 a.m. Sunday morning it was open.

Law enforcement asked that motorists avoid the area and use alternate routes. Police said they will soon update the public with more information. Monday's update on the incident can be found HERE.

Pedestrian struck

Separately, Modesto police said they responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle at approximately 11:30 p.m. Saturday night near West Briggsmore Avenue and Carver Road. The vehicle was traveling west on West Briggsmore Avenue when the collision occurred, police said.

The pedestrian was taken to the hospital but later succumbed to their injuries, according to law enforcement. The driver of the vehicle reportedly remained at the scene and was fully cooperative.

Authorities said they are not yet identifying the victim, but witnesses are encouraged to contact Traffic Safety Officer Justin Beverson at BeversonJ@modestopd.com.
