Stanislaus County readies for incoming storm amidst sunny skies

Meteorologists expect the next round of atmospheric river storms to have the most significant impact on the valley.

MODESTO, Calif. — The weather has been busy this week, but forecasters say it's not over yet. Another storm powered by an atmospheric river is set to hit Northern California early this week.

This time, it's the Valley. That means places like Stanislaus County will be most impacted, but on a sunny Sunday, the last thing on many people's minds is readying for rain.

Modesto resident Julio Carrillo, however, is an opportunist.

"That's why I came out today," said Carrillo standing beside a pile of leaves with a rake in hand. "Because it's a beautiful day,"

It might be his job to maintain the downtown building that he was raking leaves in front of Sunday, but for Carrillo, there's more to it.

"You want to keep the community clean," Carrillo said.

He took the opportunity to help his community and took advantage of his twin granddaughters' school schedule, who he enlisted to help clean up the gutters.

"You get older, and it's not the same. You're not the same. The body's not the same. It means a lot. It's a lot of help," Carrillo said. "They never complain."

While he may not have the same help, Franco Layton also spent Sunday cleaning up his community by blowing leaves into piles away from the gutters and drains in his neighborhood.

"A lot of leaves fall, and you have to keep the road clean," Layton said in Spanish. "This isn't my profession. I do it because I like the street to be clean."

At a free sandbag location near the City of Modesto's corporation yard, things were slow Sunday but several footprints in the sand and large amounts of it missing indicate that it was busy at some point.

The location is one of at least two open in Stanislaus County.

It's also been busy lately at auto shops. Employees at one of them said their dumpsters have been filled with old windshield wiper blades, and new ones have been flying off the shelves.

As they say, it's now or never, and for people like Carrillo, a sunlit Sunday is the perfect time to get ready.

"Get out there and start cleaning up," Carrillo said. "Take advantage of it, that's what I would say."
