38-year-old man drowns at Modesto Reservoir

Family members said the man yelled for help and then went underwater.

STANISLAUS COUNTY, Calif. — A man from Oakland died Tuesday after drowning in the Modesto Reservoir.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office said around 4:25 p.m. Tuesday, family members called about a man who was struggling to stay afloat in the Modesto Reservoir. Family members said the man yelled for help and then went underwater, according to the sheriff's office.

Several emergency responders went to the reported drowning and searched for the man. Around 7 p.m. the sheriff's office's dive team found the man. His name wasn't released, but he was identified as a 38-year-old Hispanic man. The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office will do an autopsy and determine the cause of death.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim during this time," the sheriff's office said in a Facebook post.

This drowning comes after an elderly man drowned and died at the Modesto Reservoir on Saturday, June 29. He wasn't wearing a life jacket.

The sheriff's office also shared several water safety tips. 

  1. Wear a life jacket. These are provided for free by Stanislaus County Parks & Recreation
  2. Know your limitations when entering any body of water
  3. Moderate your alcohol intake
  4. Always swim with someone else who can provide or reach out to others for help during an emergency
