PLACER COUNTY, Calif. — The bodies of two men reportedly swept away Saturday evening by the American River in Placer County while they were trying to fish have been found, authorities said.
At approximately 7 p.m., three men went to the area of Oregon Bar to fish, and two of them — both about 20 years old — got into the water, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said. One of them was swept away, and the second man tried to help but was also pulled in by the current.
The sheriff’s office said it first received the report around 9 p.m. Saturday that the men had not resurfaced. Its dive team soon responded, but darkness and fast-moving water made conditions unsafe for the search, according to law enforcement. Fog also impacted the use of drones Sunday morning.
Then, Monday, the sheriff's office posted on Facebook that the bodies of the two men were recovered after being discovered downriver by the Placer County Sheriff's Office Drone Operator.
The two men have not been positively identified yet.
"We extend our condolences to the loved ones impacted by this tragedy," wrote the sheriff's office.
