Roseville adoptive parents arrested after 9-year-old son dies

The child was found unresponsive last week and later died at UC Davis Medical Center. The cause of death hasn't been released, but police said the child wasn't shot.

ROSEVILLE, Calif. — The adoptive parents of a 9-year-old in Roseville found unresponsive and later declared dead are facing homicide charges.

The adoptive father, identified as 37-year-old Cory Blakley, was arrested Wednesday evening, the Roseville Police Department said in a Thursday update. He's being accused of homicide and child endangerment charges.

Roseville police say the boy’s adoptive mother, 37-year-old Kimberly Blakley, was arrested and booked Wednesday on suspicion of child abuse and homicide.

Police said that the child who died was not biologically related to the Blakleys.

According to the Roseville Police Department, the investigation began Feb. 2 when first responders were called to a home on New England Drive for medical aid.

Upon arrival, officers found an unresponsive 9-year-old boy. He was taken to UC Davis Medical Center where he was pronounced dead Feb. 5. The cause of death hasn't been released, but police said the child wasn't shot.

“They're a wonderful family. And this is just horrible what's happened. It's like a nightmare,” said Ana Valdez, a neighbor in the area.

She said the family was always helpful to her and had a total of seven kids.

“She started with two when I knew her, and then she adopted one little boy in the hospital. Then later, social services came back and said we have a family of four,” said Valdez.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and the boy’s siblings are under protective custody.
