SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Employees of Golden 1 Center and guest are speaking out after chaos erupted before a concert Friday night, which forced the concert to be postponed due to safety concerns.
The Sacramento Kings are slated to play at home Monday night, marking it as the first event at the venue since the incident.
An employee of Golden 1 Center called it unnerving to have seen and experienced a massive crowd take over the entrance.
That person also said they were not trained on what to do if a crowd ever broke in, and they're now wanting protocols in place to keep them safe.
For hours, fans of Rod Wave waited in line at Golden 1 Center Friday night. Some stood in line starting around 5 p.m.
"We waited out here till 8:30 p.m. Crowd getting kind of rowdy, we're all wondering like when are we going to get inside. We're outside waiting. It's been hours. No communication," said Joshua Hamilton, an attendee at the Rod Wave concert.
Hamilton said the center eventually opened the doors about 10 minutes later. At some point, the crowd heard what they thought were gunshots outside.
"Then all of a sudden, the doors open. But mind you, the doors open for a second and they close. But then they got open again, so people started running inside. People getting trampled over, security, staff getting trampled over. You know, people just doing crazy stuff in there. It was wild," Hamilton said.
In a video, shown to ABC10, people can be seen taking drinks from a concession stand inside.
An employee of Golden 1 Center, who was there, said there was no protocol in place for something like this.
They didn't want to be identified for fear of losing their job. They said it was around 9 p.m. when they heard over the radio "shots fired" and then saw people running in and knocking over metal detectors.
About 10 minutes later, employees told ABC10 they were asked to lock themselves inside a secure room for about an hour.
Sacramento police later said there was no evidence found of a shooting, but fireworks were found in the DOCO plaza.
On Monday, ahead of a Sacramento Kings game, ABC10 asked Golden 1 Center what safety measures will be taken after the incident so people will feel safe going to other events.
They provided the following statement:
"This was an isolated incident that we take very seriously. As always, the safety and security of our guests and employees is our number one priority. We look forward to welcoming Kings fans to Golden 1 Center for tonight's game against the Portland Trail Blazers."
Hamilton and the employees said the performers did not have the stage set up in time. They also said Golden 1 Center was not prepared for something like this.
"I feel like if we would have had communication on what was going on, I feel most of that could have been prevented," Hamilton said.
The concert was rescheduled for Saturday but was postponed again because of staffing issues.
The employee said they were told counselors will be made available for employees who work Monday night. Meanwhile, Sacramento police said no arrests have been made after Friday's incident.
